Boston Get-Away

Just recently I decided to take a solo trip to Boston. I have been meaning to visit a good friend of mine from college that is now residing there, and another friend (also from college) who is originally from there and was visiting home herself from L.A. It's funny because when you go away to college, you spend so much time with the friends you make, they become your new family. Then graduation comes along, and you hardly see the people you have gotten use to seeing every single day of your life for 4 years. Getting tired of New York, and wanting to travel a bit before starting school again, Boston was absolutely the best way to kick off summer with a quick get-away. It was a wonderful trip of blissful memories with some of my fave old college buds.

The city itself is just like New York, but smaller and cleaner, with a very simple and easy subway system to get around, (the T). I remember the first time I went to Boston, it was after my junior year of college, and I fell in love with it so much. I told myself, "Wow, if I would have knew that this is what Boston is like, I would have came here for college instead." Being a city girl myself, I knew I wanted to stay near NYC because I didn't think I would survive anywhere else. But after being to Boston a few times, I know I could have definately survived out there. The only problem would have been the 5 hour commute back home on Holidays, and all the nasty Red Sox fans (as a Yankee fan, I don't go overboard like they do!) However, I do love that city. Everytime I'm there I'm never ready to come back home.

Newest Endeavor: Grad School !!!

This coming Fall I shall embark on a new adventure... to graduate school. I have successfully been accepted into CUNY - The City College of New York. I am enrolled in the School of Education to receive my M.S. in Educational Theatre.

Returning to school has been a long decision in the making. Pondering on what the next step in my life will be, had really taken a pull on me mentally. After much time of thinking, praying, and stressing, I am now satisfied with my decision to go back to school. I am also grateful for the opportunity to get accepted into the program that I really set my heart on.

I haven't been a student in sooooooooo long, and I am ready to face the challenges. I'm actually looking forward to dive into that mentality of a student and it's duties; the studying, the in-class discussions, the papers to write, the reading (OK, not so much the reading, unless they're plays which I would never mind.) Also, knowing alone that I will be studying in a subject that will only better my career is oh-so-exciting. With a positive frame of mind, I know I will not only succeed but prevail.

My biggest concern in going back to school is multi-tasking everything else in my life. I still plan booking gigs as an Artist, developing my craft, improving creatively as a Teaching Artist, individual growth, and personal exploration of my stamp as a Latina in NYC.

(Wow, this does seem like a lot on one plate...doesn't it?)

However, if the past few years of juggling work, performing, family, a social life, and "me time" has taught me anything, it is this: Time Management! I have a tendency of letting my anxiety get the best of me, and letting my stress consume the best part of me. But, with God's grace, I know He will help me get by and give me the patience and sound mind I will need to achieve my goals.

And Mom: I will try to not call you in the middle of the night at 2am, crying, during finals week or during hell week of a show. (Yes, this happened every semester during undergrad, lol.)

Lin-Manuel Miranda

Just recently, I have had the pleasure of meeting Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of In the Heights. He is such an inspiration.

Growing up with a passion for theatre was muddling. I didn't see enough Latino role models involved in the arts. Yes, I had Latino role models in front of me, on a personal level, whom inspired and encouraged me to engage in works that embraced the Latino community. However, when I turned on the television I never saw a Latino portrayed in a positive light. We always played the maid, janitor, or cashier. But worse, when I attended a musical on Broadway, I never saw Latinos on stage or stories told to represent the Latino community. Being a Native Latina New Yorker, I didn't understand why the story of my community was not being told.

I waited ten years for Broadway to tell the story of Latinos in New York City. Then In the Heights hit Broadway, after it's successful run Off-Broadway. Boy, was I glad. This musical touched upon so many levels of Latinos in New York. Not only did it share the story of three different generations, but it displayed Latinos positively.

I am forever grateful for Lin's In the Heights. I was humbled to share with him how much the show meant to me, and through his eyes I was able to see how humbled he was to hear it.
